Q:How does Protean Hulk's effect work? Do you put as many creatures as you want with the CMC of 6 or less or is it as many cards that will have a total CMC of 6? A few friends and I were discussing this last night.

Protean Hulk

Protean Hulk says:

When Protean Hulk dies, search your library for any number of creature cards with total converted mana cost 6 or less and put them onto the battlefield. Then shuffle your library.

The word total is right in the ability. The total converted mana cost of all the creatures you search for must add up to 6 or less.

Here’s an example. The old Flash-Hulk combo (which used the spell Flash to cheat Protean Hulk onto the battlefield on two mana) searched out the following creatures:

  • 4 Phyrexian Marauder
  • 4 Shifting Wall
  • 4 Disciple of the Vault

The total cost for these twelve creatures is only four mana. The Maurauders and Walls would enter the battlefield as 0/0s and immediately be put into the graveyard, which would trigger all four of the Disciples. The result was the opponent losing 4 x 8 = 32 life.

Another potential set of creatures you could search for (and this one’s my favorite):

  • 4 Dryad Arbor
  • 4 Hedron Crab
  • 1 Sakura-Tribe Elder

The total cost for these nine creatures is still only six mana. The four Dryad Arbors entering the battlefield will trigger each of the Hedron crabs. Sacrificing the Sakura-Tribe Elder grabs a fifth land, which will also trigger the Crabs. In total, you make somebody mill for 5 x 3 x 4 = 60 cards.
